Y’all, I’m running way behind this week: blame it on work, pregnancy brain (surprise!), whatever. But, I’m so ready for the weekend! This weekend’s forecast has me buzzin’ and ready to soak up the spring sun. Here’s all the fun you can get into around the Coastal Bend:
HOT YOGA, COLD BEER
Friday, 6:30 p.m.
Nueces Brewing Company
Are you feeling a little downward dog? Mercury in retrograde got you out of alignment? Life in general throwing you off balance? Do you feel a little more limber with some liquid help? This donation-based class is held weekly in the brew room of Nueces Brewing. Grab a cold one for some hot yoga, and we promise you, you’ll feel like a happy baby in no time.
TEXAS MUSIC WARS
Friday and Saturday, 7 p.m.
The Red Rabbit Nightclub
Are you ready to rock? It’s a Texas-sized showdown as the stage is set for an epic battle of the bands. In the third round Friday night, get rocked by East & The Crow, Almost Always and Identity Crisis. Round four on Saturday, The Hard Knocks, Undone and Razcat vie for the top spot. Find out more here.
GAME SHOW KARAOKE WITH KAT AND HEIDI
Friday, 9 p.m.
House of Rock
Put your karaoke skills to the test and win some prizes at Gameshow Karaoke! Hand me the mic and move over Jimmy Fallon; I’m all about sangin’ my way to the top. Contestants will sing a song of their choice from wherever the roulette wheel lands; impress the audience and move up the ranks. Competition starts at 10 p.m. sharp, so get to House of Rock early to sign up! Did we mention the cash prizes?
THIRD ANNUAL ROCKPORT KITE FESTIVAL
Saturday, 10 a.m.
Rockport Festival Grounds
To quote that absolute bop from ‘Mary Poppins,’ “let’s go fly a kite up to the highest height.” Take advantage of that coastal breeze and send those kits up, up and away (well, as far as your line will let it). BYOK (bring your own kite) or grab one at the festival. This free, family-friendly event offers kite-making workshops, flying demonstrations and even a stunt kite flying team from Austin. Come for the kites, stay for live music and food.
COAST GUARD COMMUNITY DAY
Saturday, 10 a.m.
Water’s Edge Park
Did you know that Texas has about 367 miles of coastline? (Cue *the more you know* graphic.) Head over to Water’s Edge Park to celebrate the brave Coasties that patrol and keep our coast safe. Witness a search-and-rescue helicopter demonstration and explore a small boat display. Bring the whole family to learn about different Coast Guard jobs at this fun-filled event.
ISLAND ART MARKET
Saturday, 10 a.m.
Don and Sandy Billish Park
Stroll over to the Island for this second Saturday’s Island Art Market. Take advantage of the sunshine and take home something special from one (or two, or three, or more) of the more than 40 vendors setting up shop. From arts and crafts to food and home decor, there’s something for everyone at this family- and pet-friendly market. Take a train ride around the park on the CATS Express while you’re there!
25TH ANNUAL EARTH-BAY DAY FESTIVAL
Saturday, 10 a.m.
Heritage Park
Calling all Planeteers and people of Earth! Celebrate the planet we call home, and all it has to offer, at the annual Earth Day Bay Day Festival on Saturday at Heritage Park. This free, family-friendly event has something for everyone: interactive and educational exhibits, wild animal shows, a plant giveaway, food, freebies and more. I mean, there’s only one Earth, so everyday should be Earth day … but I’ll take a free plant any day.
ROCK N ROLL FLEA MARKET
Saturday, 11 a.m.
House of Rock
Get ready to rock, errr, shop at this installment of the Rock N Roll flea market. Snag that rockin’ merch from vinyls and CDs to tees, and everything else you need to add to your collection. Stop by House of Rock on Saturday to shop small and support local vendors – what could be more metal than that?
CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
Saturday, noon
Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures
Time to see everything through sakura-tinted glasses: it’s cherry blossom season! Be tickled pink at the Texas State Museum of Asian Cultures’ Cherry Blossom Festival. There’s fun for the whole family including vendors, food trucks, dance and martial arts performances, Taiko drums, cosplay contest and more. General admission.
FISH FEST
Saturday and Sunday, noon
Conn Brown Harbor, Aransas Pass
This is one festival that’ll have you hooked! Head out to Aransas Pass for two days of live music, shopping and family fun. Compete in the long-distance or accuracy contest “fish hole” for a chance to snag the prize pot and a trophy. Cast out for some fun with the piggy-perch contest, biggest sheepshead award, mullet toss and 5-gallon bottle toss.
CORPUS CHRISTI BALLET PRESENTS SWAN LAKE
Saturday, 7 p.m.
American Bank Center
Marvel at a tale of love and betrayal as the Corpus Christi Ballet presents Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, “Swan Lake.” (You know, the ballet that inspired 1994’s classic, “Swan Princess” and the production that pits rivals Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis in 2010’s “Black Swan”.) Tippy-toe your way to Ticketmaster to pick up your tickets for Saturday’s performance.
ANGEL LIGHT PSYCHIC & HEALING FAIR
Sunday, 10 a.m.
Emerald Beach Hotel
Mercury retrograde may be getting you down, but don’t let that stop you from having a good time Sunday. Make like the The Fool tarot card, and take that first step: Get your chakras realigned, have your tarot cards read and pick up some spiritual items at the Angel Light Psychic and Healing Fair. Grab a drink from the cash bar, open up your third eye and raise your vibrations at this free event Sunday.
WATER STREET FARMER’S MARKET
Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Water Street Market
Kick off your Sunday Funday by supporting local vendors and restocking your pantries with fresh veggies, and more, when you head down to the only Sunday farmer’s market at Water Street Market.
